This study endeavors to assess spectral depths, explore Basement structure variability, and deduce geothermal heat distribution by determining Curie point depth (Zb) through aeromagnetic data analysis across 14 sheets in Southwestern Nigeria. The depths to the shallow magnetic source (Zt) range from 0.14286 km to 1.02632 km, indicating sediment thickness, with the deepest point situated in the Northwestern region and progressively shallower towards the central and Southern portions of the study area. Depths to the deeper magnetic source (Z0) span from 1.08333 km in the North-central part to 3.23529 km in the Southwestern part. The primary sources of the first layer (Zt) depth are intrusions/outcropping Basement rocks, while the second layer (Z0) results from the intrusion of magnetic rocks into the basement, intra-Basement fissures, and deeper magma intrusions below the bedrock. Curie point depth ranges from 1.87380 km to 6.25629 km, with the North-central region exhibiting the shallowest depths, followed by the Northeast, Northwest, and Southeast. Shallow Curie point depth is attributed to magma upwelling and magmatic intrusion in highly fractured quartzite units and older granite units, while deeper Curie point in the Southwestern part may result from isostatic compensation/recovery. Given that Curie point depths are shallower than 10 km, the study area holds geothermal resource potential, particularly in the North-central region. The correlation between estimated spectral depths from aeromagnetic data and observed geothermal signatures in the study area promises to be advantageous in the pursuit of alternative energy generation, potentially mitigating the effects of global warming.

Four Aeromagnetic data over a part of the Nigerian Sector of the Mamfa Basin have been analyzed using qualitative approach and spectral analysis. The aeromagnetic maps, its analytic signal amplitude and geological modelling sketch helped in identifying the nature and depth of the magnetic sources in the study region. The qualitative interpretation reveals that the study area is characterized by magnetic lineament trend in NE-SW direction and subordinate E-W direction. The results obtained are in line with the trend of the Benue Trough. The aeromagnetic maps reveal that the sedimentary thickness increases towards the northern parts of the study area. The results also reveal that the total magnetic field intensity range from 7800 to 8290 nanotesla (nT) in the study area. The residual anomaly map reveals that the maximum anomaly value is 160nT which is found around Bansara and Ugep environs while the minimum magnetic value is -140nT towards the Abakiliki and Ikom areas. Results from spectral analysis indicated two magnetic source depths, which account for deeper and shallower sources. The deeper magnetic sources vary from 2.76 km near Abakiliki to 5.37 km near Bansara, whereas the shallow magnetic sources vary from 0.58 km near Ikom to 1.76 km near Ugep. The depth to basement map reveals that the sediment thickness increases towards the northern parts of the study area. The depths to basement are deeper in the northern and central parts trending northwest-southeast direction and shallower in the eastern and southern parts of the study area. The result also shows a linear depression with sedimentary accumulation trending northwest-southeast. The temperatures at depth for each anomaly block were estimated to range between 48.46 and 225.69°C with an average of 117.04°C. Based on the computed sedimentary thickness (2.76-5.37km) and temperature at depth (62-220°C), the possibility of hydrocarbon generation in the northern and central parts of the study area is realistic

Determination of hydrocarbon potentials in Masu area northeastern Nigeria using forward and inverse modeling of aeromagnetic and aerogravity data

Aeromagnetic and aerogravity data covering Masu area, which lies within latitudes 12°00′ to 13°00′ North and longitudes 12°30′ to 14°00′ East in Nigerian sector of Chad Basin have been interpreted qualitatively and quantitatively. Regionalresidual separation was carried out by applying polynomial fitting (first order), which was fitted by least square method. First order was used because it is the best regional fit for our data as it reflected the available geological information of the area. The residual values of both magnetic and Bouguer anomalies obtained were used to produce the residual magnetic intensity and residual gravity maps respectively. These maps show intrusive basement rocks in the eastern part of Masu. The forward and inverse of aeromagnetic data modeling estimated basement depths for profiles P1 and P2 were 4300 and 1195 m, with respective magnetic susceptibility values of 0.0003 and 0.0250, which indicate minerals like limestone and marble. Similarly, the estimated basement depths from the forward and inverse of aerogravity data modeling are 6524 and 4312 m for P1 and P2 with density contrasts of 0.72 and 0.255 g/cm 3 . The results from this work indicate that the area has some geologic features suitable for hydrocarbon and mineral deposits.
