SPECS: Secure and Privacy Enhancing Communications Schemes for VANETs

Abstract: Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is an emerging type of networks which facilitates vehicles on roads to communicate for driving safety. The basic idea is to allow arbitrary vehicles to broadcast ad hoc messages (e.g. traffic accidents) to other vehicles. However, this raises the concern of security and privacy. Messages should be signed and verified before they are trusted while the real identity of vehicles should not be revealed, but traceable by authorized party. Existing solutions either rely heavily on a … Show more

“…Some of the settings and parameters of our simulation are adopted from [13], [7] and [16]. The RSU-to-Vehicle Communication (RVC) and the Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC) ranges are set to 600 m and 300 m, respectively.…”

“…Most of the pseudonym updating schemes use the asymmetric 7,8 and symmetric cryptography, and identity-based cryptography method. 9,10 Since the pseudonym certificate is only valid during a short time, vehicle must request to CA for updating its pseudonym; the communication cost is not negligible. Although symmetric cryptography scheme [11][12][13] is more efficient, however, the key distribution is impractical in many network environment.…”
