Species diversity of vaginal lactobacilli in norm and in dysbiotic states

Abstract: Introduction. In healthy women of reproductive age, the vaginal microflora is represented mainly by lactobacilli. They provide a barrier function, preventing the propagation of opportunistic pathogens and the colonization of the vagina by pathogenic microorganisms. It is shown that the lactobacillary microflora of the vagina is very diverse, but not all species of lactobacilli can provide reliable protection of the female organism. Objective: to characterize the species and quantitative composition of va… Show more

“…Different types of lactobacilli play an important role in maintaining the constancy of the vaginal microflora, but their share in this does not have the same degree. The dominance of Lactobacillus crispatus in the lactoflora is associated with the normal state of the vaginal microbiota, whereas the proportion of Lactobacillus iners-dominated samples in the vaginal lactoflora is higher in dysbiotic processes [1]. The question of the protective capacity of Lactobacillus iners remains controversial.…”

“…In bacterial vaginosis, the number of lactobacilli producing hydrogen peroxide significantly decreases or they are completely absent [1], polymicrobial, mainly anaerobic microflora prevails (the proportion of Gardnerella vaginalis, Mycoplasma hominis, Mobiluncus spp. increases), the overall degree of colonization of the vagina by various microorganisms increases (up to 109-1011 CFU/ml), the pH of the vaginal discharge increases (more than 4.5) [2].…”

“…Lactobacilli are a marker of the normal microbiocenosis of the genital tract. It is lactobacilli that determine the degree of colonization resistance of the vagina [8,9,15,16].…”
