Spatiotemporal meta-analysis: reviewing health psychology phenomena over space and time

Abstract: Individual studies of health psychology are samples taken in particular places at particular times. The results of such studies manifest multiple processes, including those associated with individual, sample, intervention, and study design characteristics. Although extant meta-analyses of health phenomena have routinely considered these factors to explain heterogeneity, they have tended to neglect the environments where studies are conducted, which is ironic, as health phenomena cluster in space and times (e.g… Show more

“…All issues of research interest occur in space and time; some of these variables may explain more variance than some of the traditional moderators— or may interact with these moderators. Thus, methods to incorporate spatiotemporal considerations into research syntheses are needed to address the true complexity of study findings in psychology and other fields (Johnson, Cromley, & Marrouch, ).…”

“…The integration of these methods would increase the amount of valuable information contributing to decision-making regarding the comparative effectiveness of health interventions. Specifically, spatiotemporal meta-analysis is a technique designed to account for heterogeneity in research findings due to variability in study environments (Johnson, Cromley, & Marrouch, 2017). This approach expands the traditional process of conducting meta-analysis to include methods for the coding and modelling of geographical and temporal information.…”
