SPASE 2.0: a standard data model for space physics

Abstract: SPASE-for Space Physics Archive Search andExtract-is a group with a charter to promote collaboration and sharing of data for the Space Plasma Physics community. A major activity is the definition of the SPASE Data Model which defines the metadata necessary to describe resources in the broader heliophysics data environment. The SPASE Data Model is primarily a controlled vocabulary with hierarchical relationships and with the ability to form associations between described resources. It is the result of many year… Show more

“…The IUGONET MDDB is built as a metadata repository based on the Space Physical Archive Search and Extract (SPASE, King et al 2010) model, which is widely used in the international STP community, such as NASA's VxOs. While the primary focus of the VxO projects is on satellite data, the IUGONET has made a systematic effort to acquire data resources from assorted groundbased instrumentation, including the digitization of analog data stored on paper and magnetic tapes.…”

“…For example, significant progress has been achieved in both the Japanese project for the Inter-university Upper atmosphere Global Observation NETwork (IUGONET) and its counterpart, the European Near-Earth Space Data Infrastructure for eSciences (ESPAS) project. Notably, there is now common use of the Space Physics Archive Search and Extract (SPASE; King et al 2010) metadata schema by VxOs (heliospheric, energetic particle, radiation belt, etc.) and IUGONET, which is expected to further contribute to the needed interoperability.…”

“…It is possible for users to search data by specifying keywords, the date and time, or location in geographic coordinates (or heliographic coordinates for solar data). The metadata format used for the IUGONET-MDB is based on the Space Physics Archive Search and Extract (SPASE) data model/metadata format, which we have slightly modified for the IUGONET's upper atmospheric data [13][14] . We have used DSpace (http://www.dspace.org/) as the IUGONET-MDB platform.…”
