Abstract: Chlorophyll meters are widely used to guide nitrogen (N) management by monitoring leaf N status in agricultural systems, but the effects of environmental factors and leaf characteristics on leaf N estimations are still unclear. In the present study, we estimated the relationships among SPAD readings, chlorophyll content and leaf N content per leaf area for seven species grown in multiple environments. There were similar relationships between SPAD readings and chlorophyll content per leaf area for the species g… Show more

“…Replacement seedlings were used from substrates with equivalent %BC but no pH adjustment and were Weekly measurements over 9 weeks were taken for plant height and for relative chlorophyll content as leaf greenness using a SPAD 502 Plus Chlorophyll Meter (Spectrum Technologies, Inc., Aurora, IL). SPAD meters measure the difference between red light (540 nm) and infrared light (940 nm) absorbance, and for a given species and cultivar under the same growing conditions (e.g., light, water availability) SPAD values can be used as an indicator of relative chlorophyll content (Monostori et al, 2016;Xiong et al, 2015). To ensure accurate measurement of new leaf tissue, four separate points were consistently measured on the second fully extended leaf from the top of the plant (apical meristem) (Bi et al, 2010;Wang et al, 2014;Yuan et al, 2016).…”

“…Use of SPAD value for predicting nitrogen content in plants has been widely proven and accepted Xiong et al, 2015;Zheng et al, 2015;Yuan et al, 2016). Furthermore, Yuan et al (2016) compared SPAD value with several reliable nitrogen indicators during vegetative growth (from tillering to heading) stage of rice and found that the fourth fully expanded leaf from the top was the most reliable SPAD measurement for predicting nitrogen content in rice.…”

“…They also found that threshold SPAD values decreased as the growing season progresses for all cultivars and planting sites. As a reminder, Xiong et al (2015) pointed out that the relationship between SPAD value and leaf N content was profoundly affected by environmental factors and leaf features.…”

“…Thus, the SPAD meter has also been utilized as a method to determine crop N status, and judging rice N demand to improve grain yield and N use efficiency over the past two decades [20,21]. However, SPAD meter output can be impacted by several factors, including rice variety, growth stage, leaf position, leaf thickness, and the measured point on the leaf [7,22]. Researchers have adopted many effective measures to account for this variability.…”
