Soybean Aphid Predators in Québec and the Suitability of Aphis glycines as Prey for Three Coccinellidae

Abstract: Since its invasion of North America in 2000, the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Homoptera: Aphididae) has notably changed the arthropod community of the soybean agroecosystem. The objectives of this study were to characterize the foliar predatory fauna associated with A. glycines in commercial soybean fields in Que´bec, Canada, and to evaluate the suitability of A. glycines as prey for three coccinellid species: Harmonia axyridis Pallas, Propylea quatuordecimpunctata L. and Coleomegilla maculata leng… Show more

“…data). In soybean, the arrival of this coccinellid coincided with the arrival of the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Fox et al, 2004;Mignault et al, 2006). Our study reports results from several agroecosystems, where the species is well adapted.…”

“…Size, strength of the integument and distastefulness of the pupae make this stage less vulnerable to predation (Félix and Soares 2004;Labrie unpublished data). According to several studies, fecundity of H. axyridis is higher than other species, with between 703 and 3,800 eggs laid by a single female in laboratory studies (Iablokoff-Khnozorian 1982;Stathas et al 2001;Mignault et al 2006). For example, fecundity of H. axyridis (2,008 eggs per female) reared on soybean aphids Aphis glycines Matsumura (Homoptera: Aphididae) was significantly higher than the invasive Propylea quatuordecimpunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) (593 eggs per female) or the indigenous C. maculata (390) in Québec, Canada (Mignault et al 2006).…”

“…In North America, natural enemies, particularly foliage inhabiting predators, can suppress Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae) populations , Rutledge and OÕNeil 2005, Mignault et al 2006, Schmidt et al 2007. Of the several species of predators that can be found in soybean, Glycine max (L) Merr.…”
