Este estudo quantificou a passagem de frentes frias pela Região Sul de Minas Gerais (RSMG) no período de 2004 a2010. Para tanto, utilizaram-se as variáveis atmosféricas temperatura do ar a 2 mde altura, pressão ao nível médio do mar e a componente meridional do vento a 10 metrosde altura da reanálise ERA-Interim do European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) e um esquema objetivo para identificação das frentes. Além disso, verificou-se a influência das passagens frontais frias na precipitação sazonal e ocorrência de geadas. Em média anual, há a passagem de 27 frentes pela RSMG, sendo a primavera e o inverno as estações com maior ocorrência de frentes frias. Embora a primavera seja uma estação do ano com grande frequência de passagens frontais, é no inverno que as frentes frias contribuem em maior porcentagem na precipitação. Com relação aos eventos de geada, as passagens frontais possuem pouca influência. Em todas as estações do ano, o padrão sinótico médio da evolução espaço-temporal das frentes frias é associado a um anticiclone migratório que se desloca do Pacífico em direção ao Atlântico.

Abstract. Using the wave model SWAN (simulating waves nearshore), high waves on the southwestern Atlantic generated by extra-tropical cyclones are simulated from 2000 to 2010, and their impact on the Rio Grande do Sul (RS) coast is studied. The modeled waves are compared with buoy data and good agreement is found. The six extreme events in the period that presented significant wave heights above 5 m, on a particular point of interest, are investigated in detail. It is found that the cyclogenetic pattern between the latitudes 31.5 and 34 • S is the most favorable for developing high waves. Hovmöller diagrams for deep water show that the region between the south of Rio Grande do Sul up to a latitude of 31.5 • S is the most energetic during a cyclone's passage, although the event of May 2008 indicates that the location of this region can vary, depending on the cyclone's displacement. On the other hand, the Hovmöller diagrams for shallow water show that the different shoreface morphologies were responsible for focusing or dissipating the waves' energy; the regions found are in agreement with the observations of erosion and progradation regions. It can be concluded that some of the urban areas of the beaches of Hermenegildo, Cidreira, Pinhal, Tramandaí, Imbé and Torres have been more exposed during the extreme wave events on the Rio Grande do Sul coast, and are more vulnerable to this natural hazard.

Abstract:The results of coupled high resolution global models (CGCMs) over South America are discussed. HiGEM1.2 and HadGEM1.2 simulations, with horizontal resolution of 90 and 135 km, respectively, are compared. Precipitation estimations from CMAP (Climate Prediction CenterMerged Analysis of Precipitation), CPC (Climate Prediction Center) and GPCP (Global Precipitation Climatology Project) are used for validation. HiGEM1.2 and HadGEM1.2 simulated seasonal mean precipitation spatial patterns similar to the CMAP. The positioning and migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and of the Pacific and Atlantic subtropical highs are correctly simulated by the models. In HiGEM1.2 and HadGEM1.2, the intensity and locations of the South Atlantic Convergence Zone are in agreement with the observed dataset. The simulated annual cycles are in phase with estimations of rainfall for most of the six regions considered. An important result is that HiGEM1.2 and HadGEM1.2 eliminate a common problem of coarse resolution CGCMs, which is the simulation of a semiannual cycle of precipitation due to the semiannual solar forcing. Comparatively, the use of high resolution in HiGEM1.2 reduces the dry biases in the central part of Brazil during austral winter and spring and in most part of the year over an oceanic box in eastern Uruguay.
