“…The referral of the former to even the more inclusive clade Falconidae has been questioned (Mayr 2009b). A pedal phalanx, also from the Eocene of Antarctica, was quite recently referred to Falconidae but also has yet to be assessed in a broader phylogenetic context (Tambussi and Degrange 2013). The late Early Miocene Thegornis musculosus and T. debilis from Patagonia were originally described as falconids from fragments of distal tarsometatarsi (Ameghino 1895).…”

“…Agnolín (2004) described the processus alularis of Ciconiopsis disposed at 90°to the shaft of the os metacarpale majus as diagnostic of Psilopterines. However, only recently it was possible to describe this feature in any Psilopterinae (Tambussi and Degrange 2013). The specimens YPM-PU 15402, BMNH A559-1, and MPM-PV4243 undoubtedly correspond to carpometacarpi of Psilopterinae, and only in the latter two cases is the processus alularis preserved.…”

“…It has been proposed, however, that some species belonging to Psilopterus did possess the ability to fly (Degrange 2012;Tambussi and Degrange 2013;MourerChauviré et al 2011;Tonni and Tambussi 1988), albeit in a clumsy manner, as living seriemas do. This hypothesis is largely based on the absence of processus acrocoracoideus and procoracoideus of the coracoid (Alvarenga and Höfling 2003), together with the shortened forelimb.…”

“…In this region, since the seminal descriptions of Ameghino (1891Ameghino ( , 1895Ameghino ( , 1899Ameghino ( , 1901 and Moreno and Mercerat (1891) most Early Miocene birds come from the Santa Cruz Formation outcrops, located at the Santa Cruz province (Degrange et al, 2012). Additional bird remains come from the nearly coeval Pinturas and Madryn Formations (Tambussi and Degrange, 2013). Bird record in these stratigraphic units is dominated by cariamiforms (mainly phorusrhacids or "terror birds"), and rheids (Ameghino, 1895;Patterson and Kraglievich, 1960;Tonni, 1980).…”
