Polyphosphate-modified calcium aluminate cement matrices were prepared by using aqueous solutions polluted with toxic metals as mixing water to obtain wastecontaining solid blocks with improved management and disposal. Synthetically contaminated waters containing either Pb or Cu or Zn were incorporated into phosphoaluminate cement mortars and the effects of the metal's presence on setting time and mechanical performance were assessed. Sorption and leaching tests were also executed and both retention and release patterns were investigated. For all three metals, high uptake capacities as well as percentages of retention larger than 99.9% were measured. Both Pb and Cu were seen to be largely compatible with this cementitious matrix, rendering the obtained blocks suitable for landfilling or for building purposes. However, Zn spoilt the compressive strength values because of its reaction with hydrogen phosphate anions, hindering the development of the binding matrix.

At present, there is growing interest in using low cost, commercially available materials for the adsorption of heavy metals. The major advantages of adsorption technologies are its effectiveness in reducing the concentration of heavy metal ions to very low levels and the use of inexpensive adsorbent materials. In this review, agricultural and forest waste adsorbents were used to remove Pb 2? ions in wastewater treatment, and their technical feasibilities were reviewed in studies mainly from 2000 to 2010. They all were compared with each other by metal binding capacities, metal removal performances, sorbent dose, optimum pH, temperature, initial concentration and contact time. Although commercial activated carbon is widely used in wastewater treatment applications, it has high costs. The use of agricultural by-products as adsorbent material to purify heavy metal contaminated water has become increasingly popular through the past decade because they are less expensive, biodegradable, abundant and efficient. Instead of activated carbon, this study was focused on the inexpensive materials such as agricultural and forest waste. It was shown that these alternative adsorbents had sufficient binding capacity to remove Pb 2? ions from wastewater.

The aim of this study was to remove a known pharmaceutics, dexamethasone, from an aqueous solution using clinoptilolite zeolite (CP). CP is a natural, versatile and inexpensive mineral, which has been investigated and applied in the last few decades. Herein, the experiments were carried out in the common conditions of a batch system in room temperature, and the effects of some parameters such as pH of the solution, initial concentration of dexamethasone, adsorbent dose and contact time were studied. Kinetic and isotherm of adsorption processes of dexamethasone on CP were surveyed in the current study. Results revealed that the maximum efficiency (78 %) occurred in pH = 4. The adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model as well as Freundlich and Sips isotherm models fitted with the experimental data well.
