Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in cats (Felis catus, Linnaeus 1758) living in Lima, Peru AbstractThe aim of this study was to determine the frequency of infection by T. gondii in cats, by examining serum and fecal samples from animals attended at veterinary clinics in the Metropolitan Region of Lima, Peru. We collected and analyzed 154 cat serum samples and 50 fecal samples, regardless of the age, gender or breed. In parallel with the sample collections, the owners answered an epidemiological questionnaire that investigated the following variables: age group, gender, lifestyle (confined, semi-confined or free-living animals), feeding and hunting habits. The serum and fecal samples were analyzed using indirect hemagglutination (IHA) and coproparasitological tests, respectively. IHA showed that the frequency of cat exposure to T. gondii was 11%. Age and gender showed no association with exposure to the parasite. Exposure among the cats was associated with hunting (x 2 = 4.98, p = 0.016) and feeding habits (x 2 = 13.34, p = 0.001): those fed with raw meat were more exposed than those fed with commercial cat food (x 2 = 9.50, p = 0.004) or with homemade food (x 2 = 4.1, p = 0.027). The frequency of cats diagnosed in the chronic phase of T. gondii infection was 88% (15/17). No T. gondii oocysts were found in any of the 50 fecal samples examined.

RESUMO.-Esse trabalho teve como objetivo estudar a prevalência e respectivos fatores de risco para infecção do Toxoplasma gondii em cães provenientes de uma população We aimed to verify the prevalence and risk factors for Toxoplasma gondii infection in dogs addimitted at the hospital. We also assessed the occurrence rates and the clinical and pathological repercussion of the acute infection by T. gondii in these animals. Antibodies were detected in 7% (26/386) of a population of 386 dogs of both genders and different breeds and ages. Only variables, eating offal, rural origin and contact with cattle have significant values of p<0.05. Dogs from rural areas showed higher risk (OD=7.00) of infection than those of urban origin. In 6.5% (25/386) contact titles were detected (between 16 and 256); these titles do not necessarily mean acute infection, but only prior exposure. The recognition of prior infection by T. gondii is vital in those hospital patients. Depending on the cause of admission, although not being toxoplasmosis the responsible, the patient should receive prophylactic anti-parasite treatment or be monitored for further treatment in case of further acute occurrence of the disease by recrudescence of encysted bradyzoites. Only one dog (3:44%, 1/386) was admitted with high titer, what may be suggestive of acute infection (title of 4096). Although the dog with acute infection has shown neurological signs, caution is required not to extrapolate a false interpretation that toxoplasmosis is the main responsible for neurological signs, since numerous other cases included in this study had neurological signs without title of acute infection, even title of prior contact. Acute toxoplasmosis was not a significant clinic disease in this hospital; however differential diagnosis should be made in ill patients, especially those from rural areas, and definitive diagnosis must be reached for the correct therapeutic approach.

Introduction: Goats are considered very susceptible to infection by Toxoplasma gondii and when this occurs during pregnancy, it may cause fetal death with subsequent fetal resorption, abortion, mummification, stillborn or the birth of weak goats. The objective of this work was to determine the occurrence of and identify risk factors for T. gondii infection in goats in different mesoregions in the State of Alagoas. Methods: The research was conducted on 24 goat breeding farms in 10 municipalities. A total of 454 blood samples were examined for anti-T. gondii antibodies by indirect immunofluorescence antibody test. To evaluate the risk factors of toxoplasmosis in goats, questionnaires were applied analyzing the farm's production system and nutritional, reproductive and sanitary management. Results: Disease occurrence was 39% with 95.8% of farms presenting seropositive animals. Significant associations were observed for mesoregion (OR = 0.23; 95%CI = 0.09 -0.57), age (OR = 0.36; 95%CI = 0.20 -0.64), semi-intensive herd management (OR = 8.70; 95%CI = 1.87 -40.43), access of cats to water provided for goats (OR = 3.38; 95%CI = 1.89-6.02) and cats feeding on placental remnants (OR = 2.73; 95%CI = 1.38 -5.40). Conclusions: Toxoplasma gondii infection is disseminated in the State of Alagoas and the adoption of a program that monitors infection foci is required to reduce the risk factors identified in the present study.
