Sonoran pronghorn use of anthropogenic and natural water sources

Abstract: The Sonoran pronghorn (Antilocapra americana sonoriensis) is one of the most endangered ungulates in North America. The use of water to improve its habitat in southwestern Arizona has been limited in part because published reports claimed these desert ungulates do not use freestanding water. Because free‐standing water has been beneficial to habitat improvement of other desert ungulates, we set up cameras at anthropogenic waters to see if they were used by pronghorn, examined literature and agency files relate… Show more

“…In Mojave, kit foxes were the most photographed carnivore at water developments and one of the most commonly photographed mammals [21]. The intensity of visitation to water developments by kit foxes in Mojave indicates that arid-adapted species may use water developments more frequently than previously believed [50].…”

“…Whether large mammals in desert ecosystems can meet water requirements with preformed or metabolic water during all seasons is unclear, but is unlikely in the hot, dry season (Mogart et al, 2005;Cain et al, 2006;Larsen et al, 2012). Turner (1973) noted that if the water content of forage consumed by desert bighorn sheep was sufficiently high, those ruminants could meet their exogenous water needs with preformed water in their food; such is the case during winter.…”

“…Certainly, tradeoffs associated with forage quality and water content have been documented in desert ungulates. Sonoran pronghorn were reported to select forage with high preformed water content but of low nutritional value when availability of water was low, with the overall effect of lowered population performance and high adult mortality (Fox et al, 2000;Mogart et al, 2005).…”
