Some physicochemical characteristics of molten salts derived from trimethylsulfonium bromide

Abstract: Ambient temperature melts were derived from trimethylsulfonium bromide (TMSuBr) and AlBr,, AlCI,, or HBr. The aluminum halide melts have Low-wavelength UV cutoffs and single-band 'H NMR spectra. In the TMSuBr-HBr system, the formation of HBr2-and likely existence of H,Br,-are indicated by 'H NMR and IR spectra. Conductivity and viscosity data indicate stronger TMSuf-anion interactions than those between substituted imidazolium and halide anions. A Grotthus mechanism may operate for conduction in TMSuBr:HBr mel… Show more

“…Aluminum chloride (Fluka AG, puriss) was purified by double vacuum sublimation, and trimethylsulfonium bromide was recrystallized twice with anhydrous ethanol (9) and vacuum dried at~40°C for 2 days. HCl gas (Mattheson) was electronic grade and ethene-free.…”

“…The reaction enthalpy was found to be 1 kJ mol À1 higher for the HCl À 2 /HCl equilibrium as compared to DCl À 2 /DCl. Ma and Johnson introduced ternary sulfonium cations for ionic liquids [53]. They proposed low-wavelength UV cutoffs and simple NMR spectra as possible benefits.…”

“…Even if ILs are of interest for several decades by now, studies on sulfonium cations are not very advanced [8,9,10] . The first reported sulfonium‐based ILs were trialkylsulfonium aluminum halides, [11] which are air and moisture sensitive. Matsumoto et al .…”

“…[3,4,5,6,7] Even if ILs are of interest for several decades by now, studies on sulfonium cations are not very advanced. [8,9,10] The first reported sulfonium-based ILs were trialkylsulfonium aluminum halides, [11] which are air and moisture sensitive. Matsumoto et al described low viscosity, high conductivity and high electrochemical stability for symmetric trialkylsulfonium cations and various anions (for example bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide, [NTf 2 ] À ).…”
