Solitary fibrous tumor of the kidney: A case report

Abstract: Highlights Solitary fibrous tumor is a rare entity, representing 2% of all soft tissue tumors. The disease is usually described in the thoracic cavity, only 105 cases of renal solitary fibrous tumor have been reported. Solitary fibrous tumors are usually asymptomatic thus they are diagnosed as renal cell carcinoma and treated as such. Typical immunohistochemical characteristic is a high positivity for CD34. As solitary… Show more

“…Interestingly, the lesion we described was isointense to the kidney in T1 weighted image and had heterogenous intensity in T2 weighted image. This uncommon finding was also described by Zaghbib et al (2). Currently, renal biopsy is indicated before ablative therapy and systemic therapy without previous pathology and in select patients who are considering active surveillance.…”

“…SFTs mainly occur in the pleura. However, SFTs have also been reported at extrapulmonary sites, such as the liver, mediastinum, breast, lung, meninges, and urogenital organs[ 7 ]. According to previous reports, 15% of SFTs originating in the kidneys are located in the renal capsule, 6% are located around the pelvis, 3% are located in the renal pelvis, and 76% do not have a clear site of origin[ 8 ].…”

“…As SFTs may originate from dendritic cells with positive CD34 expression, CD34 positivity is typically used to diagnose SFT [22]. Additionally, CD99 and BCL2 positivity may also be used [23][24][25][26] for diagnoses, and other markers, such as SMA, EMA, S-100, and CK, may also be positive at times [24,[26][27][28]. Moreover, Ki67 is a marker of tumor proliferation expansion and malignant SFTs may express Ki67 > 5% [2,29].…”
