Solid-state Rotaxane Switch: Synthesis of Thermoresponsive Rotaxane Shuttle Utilizing a Thermally Decomposable Acid

Abstract: A thermoresponsive crown ether/amine-type rotaxane switch worked under solvent-free condition was developed. The wheel component moved to switch the local position on the axle by the solid-state acidbase reaction between tert-amine moiety of the rotaxane and trichloroacetic acid. The wheel shuttling on the axle proceeded via neutralization by heating and protonation with trichloroacetic acid, being confirmed by 1 H NMR and TGA.Keywords: Rotaxane | Solid-state switch | Thermoresponsive Rotaxane switches availab… Show more

“…Mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) ( Griffiths and Stoddart, 2008 ; Bruns et al, 2014 ) including those based on rotaxanes ( Figure 9 ) have been explored in a wide range of applications such as catalysts ( Du et al, 2017 ), chemical sensors ( Brown et al, 2017 ), polymers ( Ahamed et al, 2017 ), molecular switches ( Zhu N. et al, 2016 ) and motors ( Wilson et al, 2016 ). In addition, these types of self-organised compounds have also found application in the biological field as a system for drug delivery ( Shi et al, 2015 ), target bacterial protein ( Vincent et al, 2016 ) and release of bioactive peptides ( Fernandes et al, 2009 ).…”

“…Water–EG mixtures are better solvents than water for the surfactant molecules because the addition of EG decreases the polarity of the solvent. Therefore, the transfer of the surfactant’s hydrophobic tail and the alkyl chains in the spacer and a head group from the bulk phase into the micellar core becomes less favorable. , EG also affects the surface activities because it is placed at the water–air interface, and the interactions between EG and the surfactant molecules cause g int to increase and consequently Γ max to decrease. The Γ max reduction with increasing the EG percentage has also been reported by several studies. …”

“…The physicochemical properties and aggregation number of the cationic gemini surfactants have been investigated in the presence of EG. However, there were few similar studies for the cationic ester-containing gemini surfactants . Zhu et al have studied the aggregation behavior and micellization thermodynamics of cationic gemini surfactants with a spacer that contains an ester bond in the water–EG binary mixtures using the conductometry procedure .…”

“…This cheap and simple acid enables a temporary protonation while time-controlled decarboxylation liberates volatile CO 2 and chloroform as single waste (Scheme 2a). This strategy has been applied with success by the groups of Takata, Leigh, Kim and ours to time control different molecular switches ranging from rotaxanes, cucurbit [8]uril, to supramolecular smart materials [11][12][13][14][15][16]. TCA is also known for its application in the precipitation of proteins through what is believed to be an unfolding of the proteins structures [17,18].…”
