Solid-state carrier-envelope phase stabilization via quantum interference control of injected photocurrents

Abstract: We demonstrate carrier-envelope phase stabilization of a mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser by use of quantum interference control of injected photocurrents in a semiconductor. No harmonic generation is required for this stabilization technique. Instead, interference between coexisting single- and two-photon absorption pathways in the semiconductor provides a phase comparison between different spectral components. The phase comparison, and the detection of the photocurrent that it produces, both occur within a sing… Show more

“…The ability to measure the CE-phase of a few-cycle optical pulse [66] has important applications in attosecond science, where it plays a critical role in processes such as VUV higher-harmonic generation [67,68], light-induced non-sequential double ionization [69], Gouy phase observation [70] and quantum interference in photo-currents [71]. Given that the complex electric field envelope can be measured using a range of methods (e.g.…”

“…Many of the phenomena studied depend critically on the CE phase. Examples include the dynamics of above-threshold ionisation (ATI) 4 , light-induced non-sequential double ionisation 16 , Gouy phase observation 17 , and quantum interference in photocurrents 18 . An exciting prospect is the application of the CE phase as a coherent-control tool, e.g., to steer bound electrons in molecules 19 .…”

“…The photodiode signal can also be used to directly modulate the pump power [8] or to drive an acousto-optic modulator external to the laser cavity [9]. In addition to the f-to-2f scheme, semiconductor-based solutions also exist for generating the beat note [10]. CEP detection at low power levels and narrow bandwidths can be done using linear interferometry [11].…”
