Soleus muscle flap for the coverage of pre-tibial defect of middle third of leg

Abstract: Soft tissue defects of the lower limb are a challenge to the plastic surgeon but a soleus muscle flap often provides the solution. Early reconstruction by soft tissue to cover exposed bone significantly reduces the risk of infection, nonunion and subsequent amputation. A Prospective, observational study was carried out in the Department of Plastic Surgery & Burn Unit, Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Department of Plastic Surgery, National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation, Dhaka, … Show more

“…In conclusion, the resilience of the soleus muscle flap has been demonstrated and this is in keeping with a number of documented studies since 1973 [ 9 , 11 , 12 ]. Early reconstruction by soft tissue to cover exposed bone significantly reduces the risk of infection, nonunion and subsequent amputation.…”

“…It aids in controlling infection because the flap allows for the supply of antibiotic substances. The soleus muscle also provides a good environment for osteogenesis, due to the expression of transforming growth factor-B, interleukine-6 and fibroblast growth factor-2 [ 9 , 11 , 12 ].…”

“…However, their frequent presence in risky road environments and involvement in injury-prone outdoor occupations makes them more prone to injuries, particularly in road trac accidents. 7,8 In this study, except for two cases; all the included patients were males. All of them had acquired defects following road trac accidents.…”

“…All of them had acquired defects following road trac accidents. In the series reported by Satter T et al 7 , most tibial defects were secondary to road trac accidents. Sound knowledge of the relevant anatomy helps to execute the ap elevation safely.…”
