Brazil is the biggest coffee producer in the world and different plantation management systems have been applied to improve sustainability and soil quality. Little is known about the environmental effects of these different management systems, therefore, the goal of this study was to use soil biological parameters as indicators of changes. Soils from plantations in Southeastern Brazil with conventional (CC), organic (OC) and integrated management systems containing intercropping of Brachiaria decumbens (IB) or Arachis pintoi (IA) were sampled. Total organic carbon (TOC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and nitrogen (MBN), microbial activity (C-CO 2 ), metabolic quotient (qCO 2 ), the enzymes dehydrogenase, urease, acid phosphatase and arylsulphatase, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonization and number of spores and soil fauna were evaluated. The greatest difference between the management systems was seen in soil organic matter content. The largest quantity of TOC was found in the OC, and the smallest was found in IA. TOC content influenced soil biological parameters. The use of all combined attributes was necessary to distinguish the four systems. Each management presented distinct faunal structure, and the data obtained with the trap method was more reliable than the TSBF (Tropical Soils) method. A canonic correlation analysis showed that Isopoda was correlated with TOC and the most abundant order with OC. Isoptera was the most abundant faunal order in IA and correlated with MBC. Overall, OC had higher values for most of the biological measurements and higher populations of Oligochaeta and Isopoda, corroborating with the concept that the OC is a more sustainable system. Resumo: O monitoramento de atributos físicos do solo é aspecto de grande importância no desenvolvimento de uma agricultura sustentável. Neste contexto, planejamento agrícola deve fazer parte das tomadas de decisão em sistemas produtivos, o que acarreta menos impactos negativos ao ambiente. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os impactos de usos e manejos sobre a variabilidade e qualidade de atributos físicos de Cambissolos, considerando: cultivado com banana, mamoeiro com plantio em camalhão e sulco, abacaxi e figo. Para todas as situações, solos de mata nativa secundária contígua com espécies vegetais da Caatinga foram selecionados como referência. Amostras de solo foram coletadas com estrutura preservada e não preservada nas camadas de 0-0,1 m, 0,1-0,2 m e 0,2-0,3 m para a obtenção de dados de granulometria, densidade de partículas, densidade do solo, porosidade do solo, resistência à penetração, permeabilidade intrínseca ao ar e matéria orgânica. Os dados foram analisados por meio de estatística descritiva e análise univariada. Concluiu-se que as intervenções nos solos levaram a que esses apresentem maior variabilidade espacial de seus atributos físicos em comparação aos não cultivados. Em todos os sistemas de usos e manejos, a qualidade física está mantida em condições satisfatórias para o desenvolvimento de plantas, embora se deva priorizar a melhora da rede macroporosa, particularmente a sua conexão e continuidade. Estrutura do solo.Abstract: Monitoring the physical attributes of the soil is a very important aspect of the development of sustainable agriculture. In this context, agricultural planning should be part of the decision making in production systems, and would result in fewer negative impacts on the environment. The aim of this study therefore, was to evaluate the impact of types of use and management on the variability and quality of the physical attributes of Cambisols, considering soils cultivated with banana, papaya planted in ridges and furrows, pineapple and fig. For all these situations, soils from native secondary forest contiguous with plant species of the Caatinga were selected as reference. Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected from the 0-0.1 m, 0.1-0.2 m and 0.2-0.3 m layers to obtain data of particle size, particle density, bulk density, soil porosity, penetration resistance, intrinsic air permeability, and organic matter. The data were analysed by means of descriptive statistics and univariate analysis. It was concluded that soil intervention has led to greater spatial variability in the soil physical attributes in comparison with the non-cultivated soils. Under all the systems of use and management, physical quality is maintained at satisfactory levels for plant development, although improvement of the macropore network, in particular connection and continuity, should be prioritised.

ResumoO conhecimento da variabilidade espacial dos atributos químicos e físicos no solo é muito importante, principalmente, para a agricultura de precisão. A geoestatística vem em busca de aprimorar técnicas que possam viabilizar o uso correto e responsável do solo.
