Sodium hypochlorite for sarcotesta remotion from papaya seeds: anatomical studies

Abstract: -Although papaya world production is high, the integument of papaya seeds, called sarcotesta, is an obstacle in the seedling production process. The aim of this work was to develop techniques to facilitate the removal of papaya seed sarcotesta for seedlings production. For that, two assays were developed. For the first one, the seeds were immersed in different concentrations of active chlorine (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8%) at ratio 600:200 seeds/mL of solution, respectively, besides the study of intact seeds and seeds s… Show more

“…Protocols involving the use of sodium hypochlorite solutions and ethanol 70% are common for seed sterilization, being successful in inhibiting the growth of bacteria and fungi (Barampuram et al, 2014;Fantinel et al, 2017). In some cases, sodium hypochlorite solutions can even increase germination by removing the seed coat without damaging the endosperm and embryo (Jesus et al, 2015).…”

“…However, seed propagation is the most commercially used method in Brazil, since it is an accessible and practical procedure (Nguyen & Yen, 2018). However, it presents problems, such as slow and irregular germination, due to the presence of sarcotest in the seeds (Jesus et al, 2015), and dormancy associated with the maturation and harvesting time of the fruits (Melo et al, 2015), resulting in the increase of the cost of seeds and, consequently, high cost of production, and final value of the product.…”
