“…Sodium fluoride was a widely used medical treatment for otosclerosis in the latter half of the twentieth century. Several studies have shown a modest reduction in the progression of sensorineural hearing loss with fluoride treatment [6,20,21,22, 23,24], and since the side effects are generally benign, fluoride continues to be employed for treatment of otosclerosis in some centers.…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…In general, treatment consists of hearing aids or removing the stapes superstructure and replacing it with a prosthesis: stapedectomy or stapedotomy. In 1964, Shambaugh and Scott were the first to propose sodium fluoride for the treatment of otosclerosis (2). Sodium fluoride is thought to stabilize the pathologically imbalanced bone metabolism by neutralizing proteolytic enzymes that are involved in the disease process (3).…”

“…Shambaugh & Scott 11 were the first to use sodium fluoride to treat osteodystrophy and propose the prescription of moderate doses of this drug to promote recalcification and deactivation of the active otospongiosis sites.…”

“…Double-blind controlled clinical trials have also shown the efficacy of sodium fluoride in stabilizing hearing thresholds (sensorineural component of hearing) 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 14 .…”
