Socioeconomic differences and persistent segregation of Italian territories during COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract: Lockdowns implemented to address the COVID-19 pandemic have disrupted human mobility flows around the globe to an unprecedented extent and with economic consequences which are unevenly distributed across territories, firms and individuals. Here we study socioeconomic determinants of mobility disruption during both the lockdown and the recovery phases in Italy. “…In general, mobility data have been suggested as a relevant input information to support the design of optimal restriction strategies [ 73 , 74 ]. Indeed, different authors highlighted how generalized national lockdown measures disproportionately affected local territories, disrupting existing value chains and raising inequalities across areas [ 27 , 65 , 75 , 76 ].…”

“…In the United States, COVID-19 was the third leading cause of death in 2020 according to the National Center for Health Statistics [ 2 ]. Despite their socioeconomic repercussions [ 3 , 4 ], nonpharmaceutical interventions such as social distancing, travel restrictions, and national lockdowns have proven to be effective at slowing the spread of the coronavirus [ 5 - 7 ]. As the pandemic evolved, pharmaceutical interventions such as vaccinations and antiviral treatments became increasingly important to manage the pandemic [ 8 , 9 ].…”
