Abstract

The first Library Building Plans Institute, sponsored by the Buüdings Cömĩ nittee of the Association of College and Reference Libraries, was held at Ohio State Univcrsity, Columbus, Ohio, April 25-26, 1952. Approximately fifty registrants and discussants (architects, librarians, and College administrative Offices) participated in the two day session which was directed by Robert H. Muller, Director of Libraries, Southern Illinois University, and Howard Rovelstadt, Director of Libraries, University öf Maryland.Plans for seven libraries representing a wide ränge of types and sizes, frpm the small liberal arts College of fewer than 100,000 volumes and seats for 350 readers to the gigantie university library of more than i,000,000 volumes and seats for nearly 3,500 readers, were reviewed. In all cases, suggestions for improvements were freely offered by the audience of experts or riear-experts. Much of the discussion centered on such topics äs economy of building con^· trol, flexibility, the divisional plan versus the conventional central Stack plan> module sizes, and Ventilation and lighting.
