Social preferences for ecosystem services in a biodiversity hotspot in South America

Abstract: Identifying which ecosystem services are relevant to different stakeholders and understanding stakeholders’ perceptions of such services is useful for making informed decisions, especially in regions of the world where the achievement of biodiversity conservation goals is threatened by economically productive activities. In this article, we assess social preferences for ecosystem services in a biodiversity hotspot in central Chile. We use a consultative case study to ask local stakeholders (n = 70) from the Ca… Show more

“…Stakeholder perspectives can be revealed through interviews; in-person, mail, or online surveys; focus group discussions; and/or Delphi analyses, each with their own benefits and limitations (e.g., [74][75][76]). Here, we chose in-person surveys to reveal resident perspectives and to ensure a sufficiently large, random distribution of responses, despite the time-intensive nature of this approach, and we chose Delphi analyses to bring coherence to the input of diverse green space managers.…”

“…ESVf measures the capacity of an ecosystem to produce and supply ES to landscape habitats (Rieb et al, 2017); and that its understanding is a vital requirement across a range of stakeholders with fatal decision in green cities, sustainability and climate changes initiatives (Bidegain et al, 2019). That being the case, the study extracted the quantity of each LULC classes converted into built environment, hence treated them as lost ES;…”

“…Estas unidades de paisagem são utilizadas para a gestão territorial e integram a água com os demais componentes ecossistêmicos de uma bacia. Nesse sentido, destaca-se o a função das florestas, que corroboram com a gestão de recursos hídricos, exercendo influência sobre a quantidade, qualidade e a permanência do suprimento de água doce, atuando de maneira conjunta com os propósitos de conservação da biodiversidade (BIDEGAIN, 2019).…”
