Abstract: This study was designed to investigate the social characteristics associated with the height of primary schoolchildren aged from 5 to 11. Data were analysed for 8491 representative sample children measured in England and Scotland in 1987 and 3203 inner city children measured in England in 1987. Height was negatively associated with social class but the association was not significant after allowing for biological variables. A negative gradient of height with size of sibship was evident in white children but … Show more

“…In agreement with previous studies, we have demonstrated that length and weight at birth have a lasting e ect on height (Walther and Ramaekers 1982, Villar et al 1984, Gulliford et al 1991, Paz et al 1993, Karlberg et al 1996, Strauss and Dietz 1998, Sùrensen et al 1999, PietilaÈ inen et al 2001. The impact of these variables on ®nal height, although not linear in our data, is continuous.…”

“…Low birth weight (LBW) and intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) are strongly associated with shorter height in children (Walther and Ramaekers 1982, Gulliford et al 1991, Strauss and Dietz 1998. Several studies have also shown that birth weight and length are associated with height at the end of adolescence (Paz et al 1993, Karlberg et al 1996, Sùrensen et al 1999, Pietilainen et al 2001.…”

“…The white inner city sample were selected on the basis of high prevalence of male unemployment, overcrowding or shared household amenities (Gulliford et al, 1991) and so could be expected to have lower levels of supplement use. When ethnic classi®cation was considered the suggestion that those who are most likely to receive a supplement are least likely to need one was not supported.…”
