Snapshot of HIV pathogenesis in China

Abstract: Several reviews have focused on the nature of HIV infection and its spread in various geographical regions of China. In contrast, this review provides a comprehensive update on the prevalence of multiple HIV-1 subtypes, consequent emergence of recombinant and novel forms of HIV-1 in China, and the implications this may have on HIV diversity and the development of effective vaccines. In addition it also examines the dissemination of primary drug resistance in therapy naïve patients, as well as co-infections wit… Show more

“…In 1994, the HIV epidemic entered a new phase involving spread outside of IDUs through transmission by female sex workers into the general population [4]. This phase of the HIV epidemic has been characterized by the appearance of numerous HIV strains, multiple subtypes, and circulating recombinant variants with the capacity for further recombination [57]. Understanding the emergence and spread of new HIV strains is important in meeting the challenges of HIV prevention and treatment posed by HIV diversity.…”

“…With reference to two other equally important blood-borne pathogens, HBV and HIV-1, it is known that the former has shown a much higher prevalence than HCV in the general population in China (He et al, 2005), while the latter has now entered a generally disseminated stage (Saksena et al, 2005). Strikingly, no similar outbreaks of HBV and HIV-1 infections were observed in the same area and during the same period.…”

“…Due to the enormous global economic, social, and health burdens of HIV-1/AIDS and despite the expanded availability of highly effective anti-retroviral drugs, the development of an efficacious prophylactic vaccine against HIV-1 remains a high priority, particularly among those populations hardest hit by the disease and with limited access to anti-viral drugs [ 3 ]. While subtype B is the major HIV-1 subtype in North America and Europe [ 4 ], it is also prevalent in other regions including Asia [ 5 , 6 ].…”
