Abstract. Live Sequence Charts (LSCs) is a visual requirements language for specifying reactive system behavior. When modeling and designing open reactive systems, it is often essential to have a guarantee that the requirements can be satisfied under all possible circumstances. We apply results in the area of controller synthesis to a subset of the LSC language to decide the realizability of LSC requirements. If realizable, we show how to generate system responses that are guaranteed to satisfy the requirements. We discuss one particular implementation of this result which is formulated as an extension of smart play-out, a method for direct execution of scenario-based requirements.

Abstract. We investigate the power of play-out, the execution mechanism associated with scenario-based programming, which was defined as the operational semantics of live sequence charts (LSC). We compare some of the play-out strategies and mechanisms suggested in the literature, and discuss their strengths and limitations. Specifically, we define a simple infinite hierarchy of LSC programs, and use it to show that smart play-out, the lookahead version of play-out guided by model-checking, is strictly weaker than full synthesis from LSC.This paper is dedicated to Prof. Willem de Roever, friend and colleague, with admiration and respect for his scientific achievements, his impact on the community, and his boundless energy.

Scenario languages based on Message Sequence Charts (MSCs) and related notations have been widely studied in the last decade [14, 13, 2, 9, 6, 12, 8]. The high expressive power of scenarios renders many basic problems concerning these languages undecidable. The most expressive class for which several problems are known to be decidable is one which possesses a behavioral property called "existentially bounded". However, scenarios outside this class are frequently exhibited by asynchronous distributed systems such as sliding window protocols. We propose here an extension of MSCs called Causal Message Sequence Charts, which preserves decidability without requiring existential bounds. Interestingly, it can also model scenarios from sliding window protocols. We establish the expressive power and complexity of decision procedures for various subclasses of Causal Message Sequence Charts.
