Abstract-A smart grid (SG) is a sophisticatedly integrated hybrid power generating system which allows bidirectional energy as well as management data exchanges. In this paper we look at improving energy efficiency in large scale cooperating power consuming as well as power generating systems. We discuss a clustered as well as hierarchical power scheduling algorithms that are geared towards optimizing the management of power tariffs, storage and distribution in a cooperative environment. From a generation perspective, solar intensity prediction is proposed for power generation forecasting and whereas from a power consumption perspective, we evaluate and model the power consumed by these distributed systems (consumers) and propose improving resource allocation, scheduling and network traffic management so as to make network and computing resources more power efficient.Keywords-energy management and demand response, hybrid power generating sources, power consuming systems, smart grid.

AbstractThe Smart Grid concept establishes that, in addition to power flow, the utility has a two-way data flow in all sectors of the grid including the consumers facilities. By the system data monitoring, the failure control can be accomplished with greater speed and efficiency. To achieve such a speed, rendering Smart Grid applications viable, the requirements of safety, reliability and low latency of data flow are essential. Considering a high latency communication between the control center to the last mile applications, the control and synchronization of the Smart Meter devices should not be reliable only for administrator hands, allowing be realized automatically. So, palliative actions, taken in an independent way by the network, may reduce the need for human intervention in the management. This article presents the Distributed Network Protocol version 3 commands modeling for synchronization management between Smart Meters, with aim to help the link latency monitoring. The modeling was performed in VHDL language and considered a point-to-point wireless IEEE 802.15.4 network.Keywords Smart Grid, DNP3, Modeling, VHDL, Synchronization.Resumo O conceito Smart Grid estabelece que, em adição ao fluxo de energia, a concessionária tenha um fluxo de dados de duas vias em todos os setores da rede até os consumidores. Através do monitoramento do sistema de dados, o controle a falhas pode ser realizado com maior agilidade e eficiência. Para garantir essa velocidade e tornar as aplicações Smart Grid viáveis, requisitos como segurança, confiabilidade e baixa latência são essenciais. Considerando uma comunicação de alta latência entre a central de controle até as aplicações de última milha, o controle e sincronização dos dispositivos de medição inteligente não devem depender apenas dos administradores da rede, podendo ser realizados automaticamente. Sendo assim, as ações paliativas tomadas de forma independente na rede, poderão diminuir a necessidade de intervenção humana na gestão. Este artigo apresenta a modelagem de comandos do Distributed Network Protocol version 3 de gerenciamento de sincronização entre Smart Meters, como forma de auxílio autônomo no monitoramento e gestão de latência dos enlaces. A modelagem foi realizada pela linguagem VHDL e considerou um enlace sem fio ponto-a-ponto IEEE 802.15.4.Palavras-chave Smart Grid, DNP3, Modelagem Computacional, VHDL, Sincronização.

Abstract-The explosive growth in users' demand in both areas of wireless communications and power generation has led to design of new key technologies that will be dominant in the near future; cognitive radio networks in communications and smart grid in power field. This paper proposes a novel scenario to marry these technologies together by using a cognitive radio ad hoc network (CRAHN) as the foundation of smart grid communications. In particular, the formation and throughput of a citywide network, the information transferred by the network, and how this structure can be relied upon in disasters is discussed and compared to the state-of-the-art.Index Terms-disaster management, cognitive radio, ad hoc networks, smart grid communications, femtocell.
