The University of Nottingham launched the aerospace engineering programme in 2016. Four different courses are offered at both BEng and MEng levels with the BEng consisting of three taught years and MEng consisting of four.Space educational activities at University of Nottingham are mainly concentrated in offering hands-on experiences to students. Students at different levels, starting from the 2nd year, are involved in the design of space systems, mainly CubeSat standard compatible, that will be implemented and boarded in a small satellite.The main educational project is dedicated to the design and analysis of the first space mission from University of Nottingham. The idea is to use a CubeSat platform and implement a payload of interests for students and researchers at University of Nottingham. At this phase several payloads are under evaluation. The students are supported by a board of staff members involved in different space activities from biomedical research in space to earth observation to the use and application of GNSS. Once identified the mission that will be carried out the student will be involved in all the mission phases, from the design to the launch and in orbit operation. A dedicated ground station will be installed at University of Nottingham in order to be able to track and receive satellites in UHF, VHF and S band.In addition, to implement student experiences and have soon the opportunity to see the first system designed at University of Nottingham in space, several international cooperation have been made with European partners, such as University of Beira Interior and CEIIA in Portugal, and non-European partners such as, for example, University of Brasilia in Brazil. The goal of these cooperation is not only share knowledge and experiences between teams but also launch opportunities and future opportunities.As part of the educational project the students are also involved in balloon projects, where the systems will be tested using High Altitude Balloon. Next balloon mission is planned to be launched in November 2019.The paper gives an overview of all the most interesting space educational activities involving students at University of Nottingham giving particular attention also to the improvement that will be done in the existing facilities in order to have a more effective Space Systems Educational Laboratory.

O sensoriamento remoto permite a obtenção de informações consistentes, atualizadas e relativamente precisas para o monitoramento de corpos hídricos, auxiliando nas atividades de conservação e manejo das áreas úmidas, análise de inundações, modelos de previsão de desastres, entre outros. O presente artigo apresenta uma revisão das inovações tecnológicas do sensoriamento remoto aplicadas ao monitoramento de áreas inundáveis. Recentemente, essa área do conhecimento atravessa por diversas transformações com expressivo impacto na aquisição e processamento de dados. Portanto, a revisão foca nos estudos desenvolvidos com sensoriamento remoto radar e óptico para a detecção da superfície d’água e discute as perspectivas do advento de novas tecnologias, tais como: processamento em nuvens, imagens com alta resolução temporal e novos algoritmos para o processamento dos dados. O processamento em nuvem permite um acesso a coleções volumosas de imagens orbitais de observação da Terra para um grande número usuários, o que era até pouco tempo inviável. O advento das constelações de nanossatélites transforma completamente o processo de aquisição das imagens, que resulta na diminuição significativa dos custos, obtenção de dados diários e com alta resolução espacial. A conjunção desses fatores proporciona a aceleração de troca de conhecimento e converge para uma observação global integrada.

Purpose Leading developers and providers in the modern space launch market note a splash in the development of ultralight launch vehicle (LV), driven by the growing demand for small satellites for large constellations in low Earth orbits. One of the promising ways to solve the problem of the quick launch of such satellites is to use a new type of ultralight launch vehicle with a plastic body. The project of such a launch vehicle was proposed by Oles Honchar Dnipro National University (Ukraine). Along with that, there is a need for appropriate research studies on the thermal resistance of the plastic shell, as the physical, mechanical and thermophysical characteristics of polymers significantly differ from traditional aerospace materials. The purpose of this study is to validate the design and ballistic parameters of such a launch vehicle in terms of providing an acceptable thermal environment at the atmospheric phase of the trajectory. Design/methodology/approach The workability of a new type of propulsion system is being investigated experimentally in bench conditions. To study the process of aerodynamic heating of a plastic shell, numerical modeling based on the integration of the flight dynamics and heat transfer equations is used. Findings Brief information about the design of a new type of ultra-light autophage launch vehicle with a plastic body is presented. A mathematical model for the movement of the launch vehicle at the atmospheric phase of the trajectory, and for the heating of the polyethylene body of the launch vehicle, taking into account the dynamic change in the atmospheric parameters is proposed. The influence of the motion trajectory on the thermal environment of the rocket body is investigated, rational motion trajectories and corresponding permissible g-loads are determined. Originality/value The fundamental possibility of using plastic (polyethylene) as a structural material and fuel for bodies of a new type of ultralight launch vehicles has been substantiated. It is shown that to ensure acceptable thermal conditions of a plastic body, it is necessary to use thermal insulation. It is proposed to use a polymeric Teflon coating as such thermal insulation. The results are important for the development of technologies for launching small satellites into orbit, as the use of plastic as the main structural material of the rocket body will significantly reduce the launch cost.
