“…In dermatitis herpetiformis IgA can be found in the dermis of uninvolved skin (Fry & Seah, 1974) ^"d in 90',';, there is jejunal pathology similar to that in eoeliac disease. No evidence of jejunal involvement has been found in subcorneal pustular dermatosis (Marks & Shuster, 1969). Pemphigus foliaceus may be distinguished by immunofiuorescence, though the variety which resembles dermatitis herpetiformis noticed by Sneddon & Church (1967) and later described as eosinophilic spongiosis may resemble SPD (Knight et al, 1976).…”

“…Furthermore, in dermatitis herpetiformis the predominant skin immunoglobulin is IgA (van der Meer, 1969;, whereas in pemphigoid IgG is the only immunoglobulin found (Cormane and Szab6, 1970). The association of small intestinal abnormalities with dermatitis herpetiformis (Marks et al, 1966;van Tongeren et al, 1967;Fraser et al, 1967;Fry et al, 1967), but not with pemphigoid (Marks and Shuster, 1969), would further suggest that it may be misleading to assume a similar pathological mechanism for the production of damage in the skin in both diseases. Therefore, despite the negative serum complement findings in pemphigoid, we have investigated the serum complement levels in different phases of disease activity in dermatitis herpetiformis, including iodide-induced exacerbations.…”
