Abstract: Viruses with small circular rep-encoding ssDNA (CRESS-DNA) genomes can infect a wide range of eukaryotic organisms ranging from mammals to fungi. The genomes of two novel CRESS-DNA viruses, a cyclovirus (CyCV-SL) and gemycircularvirus (GemyCVSL) were detected by deep sequencing of the cerebrospinal fluids of Sri Lankan patients with unexplained encephalitis. One and three out of 201 CSF samples (1.5%) from unexplained encephalitis patients tested by PCR were CyCV-SL and GemyCV-SL DNA positive respectively. Nuc… Show more

“…The nested PCR screening for human-associated PeCV DNA was extended to feces from children with diarrhea of unknown etiology from South and Central America [2, 15, 17, 29]. PeCV DNA was found with a detection rate of 5.9 % (3/51) in Nicaraguan and of 3 % (3/100) in Chilean fecal samples.…”

“…1). While the tropism of some CRESS DNA viruses, such as circoviruses (infecting vertebrates) and geminivirus (infecting plants), has been clearly defined, the large majority of such genomes have been characterized using metagenomics from environmental or nonsterile samples, such as feces (13,24,26,35,(62)(63)(64)(65). The tropism of the large majority of CRESS DNA viruses is therefore still unknown (66).…”

“…Several hitherto unsuspected agents, such as Bocavirus and Cyclovirus, have been recently isolated in CSF of Sri Lankan patients with CNS infections. [31,32]. Furthermore, several non-infectious syndromes such as paraneoplastic and immune-mediated encephalitis are well described, and recent reports indicate that they may be at least as common as infectious causes [28,33].…”
