Small bowel obstruction complicating colonoscopy: a case report

Abstract: IntroductionThis report describes a rare complication of colonoscopy and reviews the literature with regard to other rare causes of acute abdominal presentations following colonoscopy.Case presentationAfter a therapeutic colonoscopy a 60-year-old woman developed an acute abdomen. At laparotomy she was discovered to have small bowel obstruction secondary to incarceration through a congenital band adhesion.ConclusionAlthough there is no practical way in which such rare complications can be predicted, this case r… Show more

“…Most cases have been related to volvulus of the cecum, sigmoid or small bowel mesentery, or adhesive small bowel obstruction precipitated by colonoscopy. 8 Although ultrasonography is considered a useful tool for the diagnosis of intussusception, both in children and in adults, CT scanning is the most sensitive imaging method to confirm intussusception, with a reported diagnostic accuracy of 58% to 100%. 1,10 CT scanning is very useful in defining the exact features of a mass and the presence of suspected malignancy, although its diagnostic value is limited in the presence of significant amount of intestinal air and by the presence of previously administered barium for small bowel series.…”

“…In this case, we hypothesize that repeated impact of running caused a shift in relative position of the fibrofatty band, looping around the terminal ileum resulting in extrinsic small bowel obstruction. Similarly, the manipulation of the small bowel and colon during colonoscopy has been reported to cause the bowel to pass through congenital fibrofatty bands and mesenteric defects resulting in small bowel obstruction 11,12…”

“…To date, there have been three reported cases of small bowel obstruction after a colonoscopy and all had a history of abdominal surgery [8][9][10]. However, this patient had no history of abdominal surgery.…”
