“…Acetate is an alternative bicarbonate precursor to lactate which is metabolised significantly faster, more independently of hepatic function, causes a smaller increase in oxygen consumption and has no interference with the diagnostic use of lactate as a marker of low tissue perfusion (6). Acetate has previously been used for intraoperative fluid therapy (8-10) and correction of acidosis even in neonates and preterms (11), and therefore, we found nearly stable acid-base parameters and lactate concentrations also in this age group. In contrast to our study in older children (4), there was a slight tendency toward hyperchloraemic acidosis in neonates.…”
