The lower ineidence of skin cancer among Japanese in comparison with Caucasians was probably due to the higher degree of pigmentation of the skin among Japanese, which proteets the skin against the carcinogenic effeet of sunlight.Even though Japanese were less susceptible to solar careinogenesis than Caucasians, the carcinogenic effeets of burn scars, traumatic sears or radiodermatitis were more evident on eomparison with Caueasians living in similar latitudes.
