Six-minute walk test and factors affecting exercise capacity in children with cystic fibrosis

Abstract: PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the result of the six-minute walk test (6MWT) in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) aged <  20 years old and individuals without CF. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 50 children and adolescents with CF and 20 children and adolescents without CF underwent the 6MWT. Vital signs before and immediately after the 6MWT and six-minute walk distance (6MWD) were evaluated. RESULTS: The mean change in heart rate, percentage of peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2%), systolic … Show more

“…69 studies investigated the validity of the 6MWT by comparing the test to CPET [ 19 , 77 , 86 , 92 ], the 3MST [ 61 , 63 , 66 ], the ISWT [ 25 ], the 1STS [ 80 , 81 ] and other clinical outcomes for pwCF [ 19 , 20 , 25 , 63 , 77 , 81 , 85 , 87 , 88 , 90 , 92 – 140 ] ( tables 11 and S38 ).…”

“…On the whole, relationships were stronger between 6MWW and CPET measurements compared to 6MWD ( table 11 ). Criterion validity has been extensively investigated for the 6MWT (55 studies) with variable relationships to clinical outcomes, including physical activity (r=−0.11–0.0.827) [ 77 , 97 , 121 , 134 , 138 ], muscle strength (r=0.13–0.73) [ 25 , 77 , 88 , 109 , 113 , 138 , 139 ] and spirometry (r=−0.43–0.76) [ 19 , 20 , 25 , 77 , 80 , 85 , 87 , 88 , 90 , 97 , 102 , 105 , 109 , 110 , 112 , 123 , 125 , 131 , 133 , 138 , 140 ] ( table S38 ). Predictive validity of 6MWD was reported in five studies, with those who have a poorer 6MWD having lower rates of survival and more days in hospital ( table S42 ) [ 20 , 28 , 101 , 116 , 137 ].…”
