Background Rheumatic diseases such as ankylosing spondylitis (AS) may be associated with sexual dysfunction.Aim To study erectile function of a group of Brazilian AS patients comparing them with controls.Materials and Methods This was a cross sectional study approved by the local Committee of Ethics in Research. The questionnaire IIEF (International Index of Erectile Function) was applied to 40 AS patients and 40 healthy controls. AS patients had determination of disease activity (through BASDAI or Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease activity index), ASDAS (Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score, MASES or Maastricht Ankylosing Spondylitis Score and SPARCC or Spondyloarthritis Research Consortium of Canada), function (through BASFI or Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index and HAQ or Health Assessment Questionnaire) and BASMI (Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrological Index).Results AS patients had a median score on IIEF of 22.0 (IQR=18-25) while controls had 29 (IQR=27-30) with p<0.0001 Only 17.5% of the AS patients had no erectile dysfunction, in opposite to 87.5% of controls (p<0.0001). IIEF scores had a negative association with BASDAI (p<0.0001), HAQ (p=0.05), body mass index (P=0.03), MASES (P=0.02) and SPARCC (P=0.02) in a univariate analysis. Multiple regression showed that BASDAI was the only variable independently associated with IIEF.Conclusion There is a high prevalence of erectile dysfunction among AS patients that is associated with disease activity measured by BASDAI.

Sexual function positively correlated with older adults’ sexuality and quality of life

Objectives: to analyze sexual function and its correlation with sexuality and quality of life in male older adults. Methods: a cross-sectional study, developed with 231 male older adults. Participants completed four instruments to obtain biosociodemographic data, sexual function, sexuality and quality of life. Analyzes were performed using the Mann-Whitney test and Spearman Correlation. Results: sexual function was positively correlated with sexuality in a moderate magnitude and with quality of life in a low magnitude. Male older adults without sexual dysfunction experienced their sexuality better and had a better quality of life. Finally, partner overall satisfaction was the facet of sexual function that had the highest positive correlation with sexuality, while self-confidence had the highest positive correlation with quality of life. Conclusions: we suggest that sexual function should be addressed more frequently in Primary Health Care services, as we found statistically significant correlations with sexuality and quality of life components.

RESUMOCompreender o impacto que a andropausa pode levar ao indivíduo e sua correlação com a falta de estratégias para atrair a população masculina à prevenção. Trata-se de uma revisão de literatura integrativa, com o intuito de reunir e aprimorar os impactos da andropausa na saúde do homem. As buscas foram realizadas na base de dados: MedLine/PubMed (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrievel System Online), LILACS (Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde), SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), BVS (Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde) e de Revistas Multidisciplinar. Usados artigos dos últimos 06 anos (2015-2021) e 03 artigos fora do tempo de corte (2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013) por conter informações importantes. Foi esclarecido através de pesquisas os fatos descritos na literatura pelos artigos de referência, abordando os impactos da andropausa na saúde do homem e a forma como é influenciado seu corpo e comportamentos correlacionados aos fatores sociodemográficos a essa síndrome. A saúde do homem é definida a uma ação que envolve a forma de prevenir, dar assistência, ter um tratamento adequado para que o paciente tenha uma recuperação e reabilitação quanto a saúde na atenção básica e uma equipe especializada. A enfermagem é fundamental em relação a saúde do homem para orientá-lo de forma adequada e dar assistência, deixando o paciente tranquilo em relação a doença. Conclui-se que o enfermeiro precisa estar mais capacitado na assistência voltado a saúde do homem quanto ao atendimento melhor para o não desenvolvimento de fatores de risco sérios.
