Abstract-In this paper, the spatial modulation (SM) technique is employed at the source and relay nodes in a full-duplex twoway relay channel (FD-TWRC) to support spectral-efficient bidirectional communications while guaranteeing a low cost implementation. Maximum likelihood (ML) detectors are employed at each node that is subject to an intrinsic self-loop interference (SI). We first propose a tight upper bound on the average bit error probability (ABEP). Then based on the ABEP upper bound, an asymptotic ABEP expression is derived in the high SNR regime. Exploiting the asymptotic ABEP, an exact SNR threshold for the selection between FD-TWRC-SM and half-duplex (HD)-TWRC-SM is derived in a closed form, which sheds light on when it is beneficial to select the FD (or HD) mode. In addition, the power allocation (PA) among sources and relay is investigated, through which an optimal PA factor in terms of ABEP is obtained. All analytical results derived in this paper are verified by Monte Carlo simulations, from which some new insights are obtained on the performance of FD-TWRC-SM.

Abstract-We propose a new single-RF Differential Space-Time Block Coding using Index Shift Keying (DSTBC-ISK), which is the first in the family of Differential Space-Time Modulation (DSTM) schemes that can simultaneously achieve the following three imperative objectives of (1) forming a finite-cardinality transmit-signals set under the matrix multiplications of differential encoding; (2) retaining a single-stream ML detection complexity that does not grow with the constellation size; (3) offering a beneficial transmit diversity gain over the recently developed Differential Spatial Modulation (DSM). In order to make a fair comparison, we also conceive a low-complexity single-stream detector for DSM, which does not impose any performance loss in comparison to the existing solutions in open literature. Furthermore, in order to improve the performance of finitecardinality DSTM schemes at higher throughputs, we propose to generalize both Differential Amplitude Shift Keying (DASK) and Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK), which form the generic multilevel-ring star QAM constellation that subsumes the existing two/four-level-ring DASK solutions as special cases. Although the DASK approach has been popularly used in DSTM schemes, we demonstrate that our generalized ASK technique achieves a higher capacity and a better performance in channel coding assisted systems. Moreover, since the employment of star QAM constellations imposes the ring-amplitude dependent signal power problem for detection, we further develop bespoke MaximumLikelihood (ML), Minimum Mean Squared Error (MMSE) and Least Square (LS) detectors for DSTM using DASK/ASK, which exhibit different performance versus complexity tradeoffs. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed DSTBC-ISK is capable of achieving substantial diversity gains over DSM without eroding its low transceiver complexity.

This paper considers codebook-based precoding for Space Shift Keying (SSK) modulation MIMO system. Codebook-based precoding avoids the necessity for full knowledge of Channel State Information (CSI) at the transmitter and alleviates the complexity of generating a CSI-optimized precoder. The receiver selects the codeword that maximizes the Minimum Euclidean Distance (MED) of the received constellation and feeds back its index to the transmitter. In this paper, we first develop a new accurate closed-form Bit Error Rate (BER) for SSK without precoding. Then, we investigate several phase-rotation codebooks with quantized set of phases and systematic structure. Namely, we investigate the Full-Combination, Walsh-Hadamard, Quasi-Orthogonal Sequences, and Orthogonal Array Testing codebooks. In addition, since the size of the Full-Combination codebook may be large, we develop an iterative search method for fast selection of its best codeword. The proposed codebooks significantly improve the BER performance in Rayleigh and Nakagami fading channels, even at high spatial correlation among transmit antennas and CSI estimation error. Moreover, we show that only four phases {+1, + , −1, − } are sufficient and further phase granularity does yield significant gain. This avoids hardware multiplication during searching the codebook and applying the codeword.
