A liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry method was developed and validated to simultaneously determine chlorpyrifos, imidacloprid, and imidacloprid metabolites in soil, wheat grain, and wheat straw matrices. Satisfactory linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9965) of the method was obtained for all analytes. The ranges of limits of detection and limits of quantification for seven analytes in three matrices were 0.17–66.7 and 0.5–200 μg/kg, respectively. Average recoveries were 72.85–81.25% for chlorpyrifos, 78.54–84.70% for imidacloprid, 73.83–81.03% for imidacloprid olefin, 71.47–80.61% for 5‐hydroxy imidacloprid, 71.79–81.32% for imidacloprid urea, 70.42–82.20% for imidacloprid nitroguanidine, and 70.91–82.46% for imidacloprid 6‐chloronicotinic acid in soil, wheat grain, and wheat straw. The intra‐ and interday relative standard deviations were less than 8%. The established method was successfully applied for the residual analysis of chlorpyrifos, imidacloprid, and imidacloprid metabolites in actual soil, wheat grain, and wheat straw samples. The results indicated that the established method could be used to detect trace amounts of chlorpyrifos, imidacloprid, and imidacloprid metabolites in wheat and that the method might be able to provide some data on the detection of these seven compounds in other crops.

Trace analysis method is a reliable basis for studying the translocation and metabolism of imidacloprid used as an insecticide in wheat, and it clarifies whether biologically active metabolites including residual imidacloprid, have long-lasting insecticidal potency against wheat aphids under seed treatment during the entire growth period. In this study, a highly sensitive analytical method was established to determine the residues of imidacloprid and its six metabolites(5-hydroxy imidacloprid, imidacloprid olefin, imidacloprid guanidine, imidacloprid urea, 6-chloronicotinic acid, and imidacloprid nitrosimine) in wheat-soil systems, such as in wheat leaves, wheat ears, wheat grains, roots, and soil. All the compounds were extracted using an ACN:water (8:2, v/v) mixture and purified by dispersive solid-phase extraction. The average recoveries ranged from 74.4% to 109.5% for all matrices, with intra-and inter-day variations of less than 14.9%. The limit of quantitation was in the range of 0.001-0.005 mg/kg. The method is demonstrated to be sensitive and accurate for monitoring imidacloprid and its metabolites at trace levels during the entire growth period under field conditions.

This article presents an overview of analytical methods for the analysis of pesticide (new‐generation) and related compounds in the last 5 years, which updates the previous one. Pesticides included in this group display almost no change, but the evolution of analytical techniques is important. In general, new pesticides are now included in multiresidue methods with generic sample treatment methodologies being able to extract as many pesticide classes as possible. However, this article focuses not only on these common multiresidue methods but also on specific methodologies as single‐residue methods for the analysis of new‐generation pesticides. The most widely used detection technique for the determination of pesticides is mass spectrometry (MS) combined with gas chromatography (GC) and/or liquid chromatography (LC). However, the advances in immunoassays, biosensors and other techniques are also included. Finally, the future perspectives and the trends for pesticide residue analysis in food and environmental matrices are outlined.
