“…We did, however, find a significant increase in the extracellular levels of 5-HIAA and HVA in tissue and in cisternal CSF. These results are consistent with previous data showing that 5-HIAA and HVA levels are increased in tissue (Weil-Fugazza et al, 1979;Godefroy et al, 1980;Kim et al, 1986), in CSF (Bardon and Ruckebusch, 1984), and in extracellular fluid (DiChiara and Imperato, 1988). We did not, however, find an increase in 5-HIAA content in spinal cord, which suggests that monitoring CSF may not necessarily provide f a measure of the changes that occur in tissue.…”

“…It is generally accepted that morphine exerts its analgesic effect, in part, through release of 5-HT at the level of the spinal cord (for reviews, see Fields, 1978, 1984). Consistent with this hypothesis, several studies have reported that morphine increases the turnover of 5-HT in the brain (Weil-Fugazza et al, 1979;Godefroy et al, 1980;Kim et al, 1986) and that an analgesic dose of morphine injected systemically or directly into the brain increases 5-HT levels in spinal cord (Yaksh and Tyce, 1979;Bardon and Ruckebusch, 1984). Most recently, Rivot et al (1988), using in vivo voltammetry, reported an increase in the amplitude of peak "3" (characteristic of 5-HIAA) in the trigeminal nucleus caudalis (the homologue of the spinal cord dorsal horn) of awake rats.…”
