Simultaneous chemical fingerprinting and quantitative analysis of crude and processed Radix Scrophulariae from different locations in China by HPLC

Abstract: A validated liquid chromatography method was first developed to evaluate the quality of crude and processed Radix Scrophulariae extracts through establishing chromatographic fingerprint and simultaneous determination of five bioactive compounds, namely 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), acteoside, angroside C, harpagoside and cinnamic acid. The chromatographic were separated on an Agilent Zorbax Extend C(18) column (250 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) and detected by diode array detector (DAD). Mobile phase was composed of (… Show more

“…Thus, it is important and necessary to explore the preclinical pharmacokinetic characteristics of acteoside. Nowadays, many methods including HPLC-UV [22], HPLC-MS [23], HPTLC [24] and liquid chromatographic method with amperometric detection [25] have been established to determine the acteoside. However, most of them are with low sensitivity, or complicated sample preparation.…”

“…Crude RS is used to treat pathogenic toxins resulting from heat, swelling, and pain in eyes, and superficial and swelling infection syndromes . Zheng zhi pin is also used to replenish yin diminished from febrile disease, crimson tongue thirst, hectic fever and cough, and constipation based on different prescriptions . Appropriate processing procedures can significantly improve the pharmacological properties of crude herbal medicines in terms of reducing drug toxicity and enhancing pharmaceutical efficacy .…”

“…Although the efficacies of ZZP were cooling blood and replenishing yin and ZZP was used to treat consumption of yin caused by febrile disease, crimson tongue thirst, hectic fever and cough and constipation by different prescription. [910] Therefore, consuming the wrong form of Radix Scrophulariae may lead to undesirable clinical outcomes. Thus, whether the constituents of a ZZP changed or not is a very important issue for not only the efficacy, but also the safety of the herb application.…”
