Literature findings on the effects of advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) on company performance measures is currently inconclusive. There is also a lack of recent research on this issue from a contingency perspective. It is also a fact that the majority of research is conducted in developed countries. This research is based on the contingency theory perspective, and it attempts to add value to the observed literature gaps by exploring two less developed countries Slovenia and Croatia. Using survey data from 138 manufacturing companies from Croatia and Slovenia, we tested the effects of twenty technologies on different performance measures through five ordinary least squares regression analyses. Contingency factors in terms of company size, batch size, product complexity, included as control variables in analyses, proved insignificant for technologies' use and their effect on profits before tax, decrease in the scrap rate, material and staff costs. On the other hand, AMT has impact on material consumption, scrap rate and profits, but not in a positive hypothesised relationship.

In this study, the authors have investigated warehouse processes to identify critical ones that are wasteful. The aim of this research study was to improve the efficiency of warehouse processes by reducing travel time and cost in replenishment and order picking. To achieve this objective, the authors have proposed a mathematical model and discrete event simulation study. For the simulation model, the Dijkstra algorithm has been selected to schedule forklifts driving and picking vehicles routes in internal transport. According to the extensive simulation analysis approximately 67 % of waste could be reduced in warehouses. Of course, this number depends significantly on a warehouse layout, operations and material handling equipment used in warehouses.

The warehouse is one of the essential components of logistics and supply chains. The efficiency of the whole chain is affected by the performance of warehouse operations and, more particularly, the storage and retrieval of goods. This paper considers a storage and retrieval problem in a real warehouse with random storage and different types of forklifts, depending on the locations they can access. The problem deals with selecting locations to store/retrieve a predefined set of pallets, assigning an adequately skilled forklift to each operation and determining the order in which each forklift will perform its operations so that the total employed time is minimized. The problem is solved heuristically by decomposing it into three subproblems, each one handling one of the three key decisions of the problem, and taking into account congestion considerations. The paper also studies two modifications of the problem, adding secondary objective functions. Computational results compare the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms for the different problems in a stochastic environment via simulation.
