Horizontal wells become an important factor in improving well productivity, especially in brown-field development. Smart well completions are becoming the best in development technology with horizontal wells. Inflow control devices (ICD) are used to enhance the performance of the horizontal wells by delaying gas and water breakthrough. However, as smart completions make the horizontal well more expensive, so their use requires justification. Reservoir simulation studies are very helpful tools to optimize and evaluate the number, size and locations of the ICD along the horizontal section. This paper presents a simulation and optimization study which was carried out on the planned three horizontal infill wells in one of Malaysian field. The infill wells will be subjected to enhanced oil recovery (EOR) scheme after almost five years from their initial production. The EOR scheme will include drilling more gas and new water injectors in order to support the reservoir pressure. Application of the EOR scheme emphasizes need of using ICD to balance the expected gas and water production. The main target of the study is to properly model the horizontal wells with ICD completion using the multi segmented well approach. Several simulation runs were evaluated to cover the expected scenarios for the required ICD design. All results were compared to the case assuming production without using ICD. This is to observe the benefits of using ICD and to come up with the optimized ICD design suitable for each well. The study is crucial firstly, in evaluation of the initial simulation results of ICD application before drilling of the planned wells and secondly to have a proper ICD design model for each horizontal well which can be quickly modified in future based on the actual data during drilling operations where there is no more time available for the rig.

This paper presents the results of a study of the transient performance of a horizontal well that has been completed using Inflow Control Devices (ICD's) to modify the inflow profile along the wellbore to minimize the risk of premature gas or water breakthrough into the well. A realistic pressure and rate-transient design and interpretation computational model was developed and utilized in this study. The mathematical model has been used to evaluate the transient performance of a horizontal wellbore in single and dual porosity reservoirs. The horizontal well model utilized in this paper considers the wellbore to be finite-conductivity and assumes that the well has been completed using ICD's to control the inflow rates of fluids along the wellbore. The ICD's may be installed in selectively completed intervals of the wellbore of varying lengths and number, including variation in the number and sizes of nozzles and perforations in each of the completed intervals. A wellbore outflow production systems analysis was also included in the model in order to design or evaluate the performance of a horizontal well using various lengths, grades, and weights of production tubular goods, and for varying surface operating conditions.

In the last two decades, new technologies have been introduced to equip wells with intelligent completions such as Inflow Control Device (ICD) or Inflow Control Valve (ICV) in order to optimize the oil recovery by reducing the undesirable production of gas and water. To optimally define the locations of the packers and the characteristics of the valves, efficient reservoir simulation models are required. This paper is aimed at presenting the specific developments introduced in a multipurpose industrial reservoir simulator to simulate such wells equipped with intelligent completions taking into account the pressure drop and multiphase flow. An explicit coupling or decoupling of a reservoir model and a well flow model with intelligent completion makes usually unstable and non-convergent results, and a fully implicit coupling is CPU time consuming and difficult to be implemented. This paper presents therefore a semi-implicit approach, which links on one side to the reservoir simulation model and on the other side to the well flow model, to integrate ICD and ICV.
