Silicon-nanoparticles doped biochar is more effective than biochar for mitigation of arsenic and salinity stress in Quinoa: Insight to human health risk assessment

Abstract: The increasing contamination of soil with arsenic (As), and salinity has become a menace to food security and human health. The current study investigates the comparative efficacy of plain biochar (BC), and silicon-nanoparticles doped biochar (SBC) for ameliorating the As and salinity-induced phytotoxicity in quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) and associated human health risks. Quinoa was grown on normal and saline soils (ECe 12.4 dS m−1) contaminated with As (0, 20 mg kg−1) and supplemented with 1% of BC or S… Show more

“…The sample's turgid weight (TW) was then measured after immersing it in 100 ml of distilled water for 4 h, and the weight was recorded accordingly. The sample underwent oven drying at 70 °C for 48 h to obtain its dry weight (DW) 21 . The final values were obtained using the eq.…”

“…In wheat subject to Cd stress, the conjunct application of SiNPs, zinc nanoparticles (ZnNPs), and FeNPs was more effective than other treatments (individual NPs and combination of two NPs) in enhancing grain yield and reducing Cd accumulation ( Hussain et al., 2021 ). In other cases, the synergistic effects of SiNPs and biochar ( Alsamadany et al., 2022 ), indoleacetic acid (IAA) ( Sharma et al., 2022 ), and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) ( Moradi et al., 2022 ) have also been confirmed to be effective in alleviating abiotic stresses such as As stress, Cr stress and salt stress.…”

“…By reducing their negative effects, some metal and non-metal NPs, particularly Si NPs, have been found to increase plants' resistance to biotic and abiotic stress (Pinedo-Guerrero et al, 2020). Additionally, it increases plants' resistance to a variety of harmful metals (Alsamadany et al, 2022). Increasing agricultural yields without compromising the environment or human health through nanotechnology, is an economical and non-hazardous process.…”
