Silica/Polymer Double-Walled Hybrid Nanotubes: Synthesis and Application as Stimuli-Responsive Nanocontainers in Self-Healing Coatings

Abstract: We report the development of silica/polymer double-walled hybrid nanotubes, which consist of a hollow cavity, a porous silica inner wall, and a stimuli-responsive (pH, temperature, and redox) polymeric outer wall, as a novel nanocontainer system. The length, diameter, wall thickness, and aspect ratio of the hybrid nanotubes are precisely controlled in the range of 48-506 nm, 41-68 nm, 3-24 nm, and 1.2-7.6, respectively. The hybrid nanotubes loaded with active molecules exhibit morphology-dependent release and … Show more

“…The capsules are filled in different ways, e.g. by agitating the suspension of capsules and fillers, also under reduced pressure, the soaking of capsules in inhibitor solution and by applying the LBL deposition procedure [27,54,56,70]. In the case of soaking encapsulation, different inhibitor retention mechanisms can be distinguished.…”

“…Porous nanoparticles provide inhibitive effect upon pH-change when damaged sites are in contact with humidity. There are ceriumbased particles in carriers like chitosan [3], CeO 2 nanoparticles [4], hydroxyapatite- [5] and CaCO 3 [6] microparticles; mercaptobenzothiazole in layered double hydroxides [7] and polyelectrolyte nanocapsules [8] as well as benzotriazole in mesoporous silica particles [9]. Nanoparticles in general do not weaken significantly the mechanical properties and permeability of coatings [7,10,11,12], but their inhibition lasts only until the depletion of the nanocarriers.…”

“…They were mainly based on metal alkoxide systems particularly organosilanes and also merge with organic molecules, polymers and biocomponents. Especially aminopropyl functionalized silanes have vast interest and also have huge consideration. These materials achieve outstanding properties such as mechanical properties, thermal stability, degradation and abrasion resistance [2][3][4][5]. As a result, these polymer-inorganic hybrid materials have a lot of importance in the recent research.…”
