Signaling by Cellular Protrusions: Keeping the Conversation Private

Abstract: Information exchange between different cells makes multicellular life possible. Signaling between cells can occur over long distances, as in the case of hormone signaling, or it can take place over short distances between immediately juxtaposed neighbors, as in the case of stem cell-niche signaling. The ability of signal-sending and –receiving cells to communicate with one another in a specific manner is of paramount importance in the proper development and function of tissues. Growing evidence indicates that … Show more

“…Cellular enwrapment of hematopoietic stem cells by the perivascular niche of zebrafish has been referred to as “endothelial cuddling” (Tamplin et al, 2015). It has been speculated that enwrapment of stem cells might facilitate stem cell-niche signaling (Buszczak et al, 2016; Kornberg and Roy, 2014) or adhesion (S. Chen et al, 2013) to promote stem cell fate. Direct evidence for a role for enwrapment of stem cells, however, is lacking.…”

“…Recent evidence however suggests the distance over which contact mediated signaling of various types can operate can be extended by cellular protrusions capable of spanning several cell diameters (reviewed in Buszczak et al, 2016, Prols et al, 2016. For example, signaling through long cellular protrusions plays a role during limb patterning in the chick embryo (Sanders et al, 2013), in the development of the zebrafish pigmentation stripes (Eom et al, 2015) as well as neural plate patterning also in the zebrafish (Stanganello et al 2015).…”

“…Since the printing of cells, and their transfer to a number of different substrates such as polystyrene or glass, is a controllable characteristic in this device, and because studies of signal transduction between primary neurons require their precise individual positioning, the utilization of this device to print individual cortical neurons was also used after to obtain single and paired neurons with highly branched dendrites. The use of protrusion enhances the specificity for cells to communicate between each other 121 . Chemical cell-cell communication is not the only way in which cells use protrusions in nature.…”

“…In fact, cells can use protrusion for several different biological roles that range from expansion of their surface area to cell motility and more 122 . Therefore, the use of microfluidics devices for these studies provides new and important tools to help better understand the role of cell protrusions in several cellular processes, specifically cellular signaling and communication 121 .…”
