Side‐chain modifications of phyllobilins may not be essential for chlorophyll degradation in Arabidopsis

Abstract: Disposing efficiently and safely chlorophyll derivatives during senescence requires a coordinated pathway that is well conserved throughout green plants. The PAO/phyllobilin pathway catalyzes the degradation of the chlorophyll during senescence and allows detoxification of the pigment and its subsequent export from the chloroplast. Although most of the chloroplastic reactions involved in chlorophyll degradation are well understood, the diversity of enzymes responsible for downstream modifications of non‐photot… Show more

“…Chlorophyll degradation was a conserved pathway during the aging leaves of green plants, and affects the side-chain modification groups of chloroplast proteins. Chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b differ only in side-chain modification groups, which can be transformed into each other in the chlorophyll metabolic pathway [35]. At the ripening stage of plants, the decrease of chlorophyll content in leaves could be inhibited with BR spraying, thereby maintaining high photosynthetic efficiency and ensuring the accumulation of nutrients in the fruits and seed [36].…”

“…In recent years, the study of chlorophyll synthesis and the degradation pathway has become a hot topic [19][20][21]. Chl metabolism is strictly regulated at different stages of plant development [14].…”

“…In contrast to the heme degradation pathway, Chl degradation yields a striking diversity of catabolites, with more and more structural modifications being discovered [ 30 ]. Although the observed high diversity of catabolites appears to be less relevant for the breakdown process [ 31 ], it calls for investigations of bioactivities related to human health.…”
