Shelter availability, stress level, and digestive performances in the aspic viper

Abstract: SUMMARYThe lack of shelter can perturb behaviors, increase stress level and thus alter physiological performance (e.g. digestive, immune or reproductive functions). Although intuitive, such potential impacts of lack of shelter remain poorly documented. We manipulated shelter availability and environmental and physiological variables (i.e. access to a heat source, predator attack, feeding status) in a viviparous snake, and assessed sun-basking behavior, digestive performance (i.e. digestive transit time, crude … Show more

“…The main GC in reptiles is corticosterone (CORT; concentrations usually expressed as nanograms per millilitre); plasma concentrations were assayed in the Centre d'Etudes Biologiques de Chizé (CEBC France) using radioimmunoassay (Bonnet et al ., 2013, 2016a). The steroids were extracted from 40 μl of plasma using diethyl ether (mean extraction rate was of 97.3 ± 5.2%); the sensitivity of the assay was 1.9 pg/tube.…”

“…Plasma concentrations of progesterone and cortisol were measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA) on 50 //I of plasma after extraction with 0.5 ml of diethyl ether (mean extraction efficiency was 0.98 ± 0.10) (Bonnet et al, 2001(Bonnet et al, , 2013. For progesterone, cross-reactivity of the Sigma antibody with other steroids was low (percentage of cross-reactivity at B/Bo: desoxycorticosterone, 6.6%, 5a!-dihydroprogesterone, 3.9%, 5/S-dihydroprogesterone, 2.6%, 6^-dihydroxyprogesterone, 2.1%).…”
