Shear Resistance Capacity of Interface of Plate‐Studs Connection between CFST Column and RC Beam

Abstract: The combination of a concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) column and reinforced concrete (RC) beam produces a composite structural system that affords good structural performance, functionality, and workability. The effective transmission of moments and shear forces from the beam to the column is key to the full exploitation of the structural performance. The studs of the composite beam transfer the interfacial shear force between the steel beam and the concrete slab, with the web bearing most of the vertical she… Show more

“…Meanwhile, in terms of the research on CFST column-RC beam joints, the relevant calculation theories and design methods had been continuously developed and improved (Bai Y et al, 2008; Zhou XH et al, 2019; Zha XX et al, 2016; Ding FX et al, 2017), which promoted the application of CFST in practical engineering. According to the structure of steel tube in the joint area, three common connection forms, such as steel tube fully through joints (Zha XX et al, 2016; Ding FX et al, 2017; Wu B et al, 2013; Wang QQ et al, 2017), steel tube partially disconnected joints (Chen QJ et al, 2009; Wang YH et al, 2008) and steel tube completely disconnected joints (Chen QJ et al, 2014; Tang XL et al, 2016), were proposed and series of the relevant investigations had been performed. Different types of CFST column-RC beam joints showed their own advantages and disadvantages as well as reasonable range of adaptation.…”

“…Among them, according to whether the steel tube is interrupted in the joint core, the joints can be divided into column-through system and beam-through system. For the former, although the expected joint stiffness can be measured, the following defects are commonly demonstrated: (1) The transmission of joint shear force relies on external steel members, such as reinforced loop plate [ 24 ], steel corbels [ 25 , 26 ] and plate-studs [ 27 ], which may result in stress concentration, whereby (2) the mentioned steel members are required to be bolted or welded to the CFST columns on-site, which complicates the process of construction.…”

“…According to whether the longitudinal reinforcement of RC beam running through the joint core, the connection could be divided into two types as non-through-core connection system and through-beam connection system. In non-through-core connection system, the outer steel tube was not cut at the corresponding beam location, and several construction measures, such as plate-studs (Wang et al, 2017), steel corbels (Ding et al, 2017; Peng et al, 2018), and reinforced loop plate (Zha et al, 2016), were employed to connect RC beam with CFST column. This non-through-core connection system was beneficial to the integrity of the columns while the integrity of the beam was difficult to reach.…”
