Sexual maturation in female triploid plaice, Pleuronectes platessa, and plaice × flounder, Platichthys flesus, hybrids

Abstract: The gonads of immature female triploid plaice (Pleuronectes plafcssu) and plaice x flounder (Plutichthys j7esus) hybrids produced from cold-shocked eggs were examined. They were less than half the size of those in diploids of similar age and contained only small numbers of developing oocytes. These were similar both in size and cytological appearance to those in the controls. The bulk of the ovarian tissue was composed of nests of small undifferentiated cells resembling the oogonia in the ovaries of diploid fi… Show more

“…In most species, oogenesis in triploid females was interrupted during yolk formation (Lincoln, 1981b;Wolters et al, 1982;Benfey & Sutterlin, 1984;Suzuki et al, 1985a). In contrast to females, triploid males, in general, seem to have the potential for some degree of spermatogenesis (Lincoln, 1981b;Lincoln & Scott, 1984;Ueno, 1985;Nakamura et al, 1993), except for ayu Plecoglossus altivelis Temminck & Schlegel (Ueno et al, 1986). They are, however, inferior to diploid males in milt volume and spermatozoa quality, except for plaice Pleuronectes platessa L. (Lincoln, 1981a).…”
