Sex, Rhythm & Death: The effect of sexual activity on cardiac arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death

Abstract: Arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death with sexual activity are rare. However, the demographics are changing regarding the cardiovascular patients at risk for these events. Recent studies have highlighted that the individuals having cardiac events during sexual activity are becoming younger, with a higher proportion of female decedents than previously described. There needs to be an open dialog between the cardiovascular team and the cardiac patient to provide the education and reassurance necessary for cardiova… Show more

“…The alterations and decrease in sperm quality parameters observed in the group of rats administered with Cd were similar to those shown in several previous studies [ 47 , 48 , 49 ]. According to the description by Adamkovikova et al [ 50 ] and upon comparing the obtained data, it is likely that in rats exposed to Cd, the synthesis of epidermal proteins and other substances associated with sperm maturation were affected, triggering structural and biochemical changes.…”

“…Often, multiple methods can be combined [4, 5, 7-9, 11, 12, 15]. The most common internal causes of death are cardiovascular diseases [1,5,16,17]. The potential diseases are diverse, including chronic hypertensive cardiovascular disease, aortic coarctation, atrioventricular node tumor, AV node artery fibromuscular dysplasia, air embolism, subarachnoid hemorrhage, right ventricular arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, sudden death due to arrhythmia syndrome, aortic dissection, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, ischemic heart disease, idiopathic fibrosis, idiopathic left ventricular hypertrophy, mitral valve prolapse, myocardial infarction, various channelopathies, and cardiac tamponade [1,2,5,16,17].…”

“…Sexual activity can be considered as a form of physical exercise that imposes a certain degree of cardiac stress and oxygen demand. Therefore, it can be safe for HF patients who have mild to moderate symptoms (NYHA class I–II), a good functional capacity, and a low cardiovascular risk (no history of angina, arrhythmias, syncope, or HF exacerbation) [ 94 , 95 ]. On the other hand, sexual activity can be risky for HF patients with severe symptoms (NYHA class III–IV), a poor functional capacity, and a high cardiovascular risk [ 96 ].…”
