Network slicing (NS) is recognized as a key technology for the 5G mobile network in enabling the network to support multiple diversified vertical markets over a shared physical infrastructure with efficiency and flexibility. A 5G NS instance is composed of a set of virtual network function (VNF) instances to form the end-to-end (E2E) virtual network for the slice to operate independently. The deployment of a NS is a typical virtual network embedding (VNE) problem. We consider a scenario in which VNF instances can be shared across multiple slices to further enhance the utilization ratio of the underlying physical resources. For NSs with sharable VNF instances, the deployment of the slice instances is essentially the embedding of multiple virtual networks coupled by the VNFs shared among slices. Hence, we formulate this sharable-VNFs-based multiple coupled VNE problem (SVM-VNE) through an integer linear program (ILP) formulation, and design a back-tracking coordinated virtual network mapping algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that VNF-sharing can enhance the slice acceptance ratio with the same physical network, which represents higher physical resource utilization. Moreover, our approach achieves higher acceptance ratio by comparing to a baseline algorithm.

Network slicing is a key enabling technology to realize the provisioning of customized services in 5G paradigm. Due to logical isolation instead of physical isolation, network slicing is facing a series of security issues. Side Channel Attack (SCA) is a typical attack for slices that share resources in the same hardware. Considering the risk of SCA among slices, this paper investigates how to effectively allocate heterogeneous resources for the slices under their different security requirements. Then, a SCA-aware Resource Allocation (SCA-RA) algorithm is proposed for Ultra-reliable and Low-latency Communications (URLLC) and Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) slices in 5G RAN. The objective is to maximize the number of slices accommodated in 5G RAN. With dynamic slice requests, simulation is conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm in two different network scenarios. Simulation results indicate that compared with benchmark, SCA-RA algorithm can effectively reduce blocking probability of slice requests. We study Flexible Functional Split functionality of 5G vRAN controllers in 5G networks. We propose an innovative model, based on a Markov Chain, which can be used to characterize their performance. We consider both infinite and finite-buffer controllers. In the former, frames would not be lost (provided the system works in a stable regime), and we thus focus on the time frames stay at the controller. For the finite-buffer controller, there might be losses, and we analyze the trade-off between time at the controller (which might hinder the stringent delay requirements of 5G services), and loss probability. Matrix-geometric techniques are used to resolve the corresponding Quasi-Birth-Death process. The validity of the proposed model is assessed by means of an extensive experiment campaign carried out over an ad-hoc eventdriven simulator, which is also used to broaden the analysis, considering different service rate distributions, as well as the variability of the studied performance indicators. The results show that the proposed model can be effectively exploited to tackle the dimensioning of these systems, as it sheds light on how their configuration impacts the expected delay and loss rate.
